Board of Directors

DAVID ROSS (Chairman)

David is a chartered accountant with a broad business background. David is a director of a significant number of private companies in New Zealand and Australia and has been actively involved with start-up businesses for the past 20 years.  He has a specific interest in high technology projects.  David operates a consultancy practice focussed mainly on the corporate sector.

Stephen Henry (Chief Executive Officer)

Stephen (Steve) Henry, founder of KODE Biotech Limited, is also Professor at Auckland University of Technology (Chief Executive – Biotechnology, Scott Laboratories, Faculty of Health and Environmental Science).  Steve has a strong research and management background holding PhD’s in Biochemistry (Auckland) and Medicine (Göteborg), plus other tertiary qualifications in science/laboratory medicine, education and business. He has published over 120 scientific articles, and is an inventor on more than 20 KODE™ Technology patent applications.

Maxine Simmons (Non-Executive Director)

Ms Simmons co-founded one of New Zealand’s first biotechnology companies in 1983 and received the Distinguished New Zealand Biotechnologist award from the Biotechnology community for this pioneering work. She is CEO of the seed co-investment fund Cure Kids Ventures Ltd and advises early stage biotechnology ventures on commercialisation and capital raising through her company BioCatalyst Ltd. Previously a director of the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology and a founding director of Industry New Zealand (now New Zealand Trade and Enterprise) she is now deputy Chair of NZBio and is a director of the Maurice Wilkins Centre for BioDiscovery, Industrial Research and other life science companies. 

David Clarke (Non-Executive Director)

David has significant experience, at both Chair and CEO level, in numerous industries and has a successful track record with companies in the areas of biotechnology, information technology, healthcare, food and related sectors.
David comes from a background in engineering, finance, sales and marketing with significant experience in capital markets, raising both debt and equity. His experience includes successfully growing early stage high-technology companies to maturity and listing, as well as the management of large, high turnover organisations.
David is currently Chair of several privately held companies. His recent roles include Managing Director of ASX-listed Neuren Pharmaceuticals Limited (NZ Biotechnology Company of the Year, 2006) and inaugural Chair of Orion International, now New Zealand’s largest software exporter. Prior to this, David was Chief Executive Officer of Counties Manukau District Health Board, a 4,000 person, $750 million turnover organisation.
David is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management, the Royal Society, the NZ Institute of Directors and Trustee for several charities. He is also Chair of the Industrial Advisory Group of Engineering Science at the University of Auckland and was a finalist for both New Zealand Business Leader of the Year (2006) and New Zealander of the Year (2002).
